We congratulate Prof Peter Colman on being awarded the ADS Jeff Flack Diabetes Data Award for 2020. This is great recognition for Prof Colman to improve care for diabetes patients through the use of data and research. Prof Colman worked with BioGrid Australia to first establish the BioGrid Diabetes Clinical and Research Database at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and is now used across a few diabetes centres in Australia as the clinical system to manage the care and treatment of diabetes patients. Prof Colman has been instrumental during the expansion of ADDN to include data for T1D for adults.
ADDN Symposium at ADC 2020
ADDN will be having a symposium during the ADC 2020 at 1.30pm, 12 November 2020. This virtual event will showcase the activities and research that ADDN has been undertaking since it was established in 2012.

ADDN centres recognised in global top 100
We congratulate the Endocrinology Service, the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne and the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Westmead Hospital which were recently ranked in the Newsweek/Statista top 100 for specialised endocrinology centres worldwide. Both services are active participants in ADDN’s benchmarking activities where they are able to compare patient outcomes among other similar diabetes services. Ranking is based on peer recommendations from a global survey of medical professionals in specific areas of expertise. See rankings and full list of hospitals here.
ADDN Medical Director
Prof Maria Craig has been appointed as the ADDN Medical Director. Prof Craig commenced in this new role on 14 September 2020 and will lead ADDN in to the next phase.

Prof Peter Colman presented how data in the ADDN Registry is being used to benchmark the quality of care provided at participating ADDN diabetes centres.
Australian National Diabetes Strategy 2016-2020
ADDN responded to a call to provide input into the implementation plan for the Australian National Diabetes Strategy 2016-2020. The plan was endorsed by AHMAC in December 2017 where ADDN is acknowledged as a platform that allows sharing of clinical databases for clinical research on diabetes care.
ADDN at the JDRF Type One Summit Summit
The inaugural T1D Summit was organised by JDRF Australia to connect patients living with diabetes, parents and carers with current research and clinical trials funded by JDRF. The Keynote address was given by JDRF’s Aaron Kowalski on the research progress in type 1 diabetes. ADDN was present to promote awareness that many of the research conducted could be underpinned by the ADDN diabetes patient registry.
The Royal Melbourne Hospital Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology named a Centre of Excellence
We congratulate the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital which recently achieved the National Association of Diabetes Centres (NADC) Centre of Excellence accreditation awarded to applicants who have met the rigorous criteria as assessed by the NADC Accreditation Committee. The department was particularly outstanding in the areas of training, education and supervision, research, collaboration and engagement, diabetes foot management and diabetes technology.
ADDN Information Forum at ADS ADEA Annual Scientific Meeting
ADDN held an information session at the ADS ADEA Annual Scientific Meeting in August 2017 in Perth. This annual Scientific Meeting was attended by more than 1,000 delegates including patients and consumers involved in diabetes care and research.

The ADDN mobile app is available to be downloaded from the iTunes Appstore. Use this app to compare your glycaemic levels (HbA1c) and body weight (BMI) with children from your age group who also have type 1 diabetes. This app compares your HbA1c and weight to the average HbA1c and weight of children and teens who have their diabetes information stored in the ADDN Registry. You enter your details to get feedback on how you compare with the ADDN group, and know whether to contact your diabetes team to help you aim for and reach a level of diabetes control that is right and safe for you, or help you towards reaching and maintaining a healthy weight. Prof Peter Colman awarded in Queen’s Birthday Honours
Professor Peter Colman, AM, has been awarded a Member of the Order (AM) for his significant service to medicine in the field of endocrinology, particularly diabetes research, patient education and clinical management. Prof Colman is one of four ADDN Principal Investigators and for the past 25 years, has been the Director of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology, the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Prof Colman’s depth of knowledge, expertise and prolific research activities place him at the forefront of global diabetes understanding. His significant commitment to research is internationally recognised. He is also the Chair of the Melbourne Health Human Research and Ethics Committee. Among his many leadership roles in health, research and academia, he is past president of the Australian Diabetes Society and served on diabetes advisory boards to State and Commonwealth governments. His commitment to advancing the understanding, treatment and prevention of diabetes is both ground-breaking and tireless.
ADDN Steering Committee Meeting
The first face-to-face ADDN Steering Committee meeting for 2017 was held in Sydney on March 21st. Commitment by all of ADDN’s stakeholders was shown by the attendance of nearly all members of the Steering Committee from Australia and New Zealand, including participation from JDRF, APEG and ADS. Membership is based on the newly formed governance structure which aims to have equitable and transparent representation from all jurisdictions.
ADDN presented at eResearch Australasia 2016
Dr Loren Bruns Jr presented at the eResearch Australasia 2016 conference, held in Melbourne from October 10-14th. He described the successes and learning moments from ADDN1 and described how these shaped the focus of ADDN2. In particular, he stressed the increased focus on providing partnered centres with the tools to help audit, clean, and benchmark their own data sets to improve patient outcomes.
New funding for Type 1 diabetes research
The Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Research Network reports on a new round of funding for T1D research.
Minister Simon Birmingham has announced that nearly $4 million has been awarded to Australian researchers for the Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Research Network (T1DCRN) Australasian Diabetes Data Network (ADDN) and Career Development Awards.
ADDN is receiving a $2 million funding boost to extend the database beyond the current 6,000 young people, which will give researchers unprecedented ability to gain a national understanding of the incidence, development and management of T1D.
